Training & Curriculum - Cedars- Sinai. Rotations. The Breast Oncology Fellowship includes dedicated core rotations in breast surgery, medical oncology, pathology, radiation oncology, plastic and reconstructive surgery and breast imaging. Of the one- year fellowship, seven to eight months are dedicated to the surgical management of benign and malignant breast conditions. During this time the fellow works closely with the seven breast oncology surgical faculty members of the Saul and Joyce Brandman Breast Center – A Project of Women’s Guild. The fellow will receive intensive training in surgical procedures, including sentinel lymph node biopsy techniques, various types of tumor resections, nipple- sparing mastectomy, oncoplastic surgery, reconstructive procedures, image- guided procedures and minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Additional rotations offer experience in genetics, psycho- oncology, community outreach, and survivorship and rehabilitation. The core curriculum includes didactic sessions; specialty meetings and conferences; and clinical research. The breast fellow will present new patients at the Multidisciplinary Breast Tumor Board, where pathology slides and images are reviewed with multiple attending physicians for discussion of multidisciplinary care. Additionally, the trainee will participate fully in the management of complex breast problems, evaluate patients with both benign and malignant breast conditions and coordinate care with multidisciplinary specialists. Research, Presentations and Publications. Under the guidance of a mentor, the fellow will participate in writing journal articles and may participate in writing research protocols and grant proposals. Breast Surgery Oncology Fellowship. This fellowship is offered to board. Residency and Fellowship Programs. Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship. Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgery, Radiation Oncology. Breast Oncology Fellowship. Established in 1999, the UT Southwestern Medical Center breast care fellowship program was the first pilot fellowship program to benefit. Breast Surgery Fellowship. The fellow will learn to evaluate scientific publications and to prepare research results for submission to peer- reviewed medical/scientific journals. The fellow will be expected to participate in ongoing clinical research protocols and will be encouraged to present research findings at local and national meetings. In addition, the fellow will attend basic science and clinical specialty research seminars, including a course in statistics, and will participate in the recruitment of patients for clinical and translational research studies. We participate in national cooperative group trials including Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology, NRG Oncology, and SWOG. Previously trained fellows have presented their work at the annual meetings of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American College of Surgeons, the Pacific Coast Surgical Association, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the American Society of Breast Disease and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Surgical Oncology Rotations and Breast Oncology Fellowship. General Surgery Rotations in Surgical Oncology. General surgery residents can participate in the Emory Division of Surgical Oncology's clinical and research endeavors during their first, second, third, and chief years. Educational packets are distributed to junior and senior surgical residents and objective pre- and post- rotation- tests are given to determine the effectiveness of the training program and how much residents have learned. Emory Breast Oncology Fellowship. The mission of the Society of Surgical Oncology- approved, one- year Emory Breast Oncology Fellowship is to teach evidence- based clinical care, encourage inquiry with a research- focused approach, develop leadership skills for future career opportunities and growth, and produce graduates that will become leaders in academic breast surgery and continue the international excellence that has distinguished the current program. The program accepts two fellows per year, who train at Emory University Hospital, Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, AVON Comprehensive Breast Center at Grady Memorial Hospital, and Emory University Hospital Midtown. This multi- facility system treats over 9. Weekly multi- disciplinary dedicated breast case conferences are conducted at all sites and provide a forum to discuss novel patient care approaches as well as identify patients for enrollment in clinical trials. Upon the completion of training, fellows will have the skills necessary to apply an integrated interdisciplinary approach to the management of women with benign and malignant breast diseases in a comprehensive and compassionate manner. Retired U. S. Army Colonel and Associate Professor of Surgery Cletus Arciero, MD, directs the fellowship. Arciero's leadership skills and technical dexterity are influenced by his years of military service and tenure as program director of the general surgery residency at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Fort Gordon, GA. He recently completed nine years as an American Cancer Society Commission on Cancer Liaison Physician. Requirements and Application Process. Applicants must have completed a general surgery residency and American Board of Surgery eligibility.
